Jessie Nelson (Because I Said So) will write the screenplay for the live action fairy tale that Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) will direct. Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld will return as producers.

The original film starred Amy Adams, James Marsden, Patrick Dempsey and Susan Sarandon. It earned more than $340 million worldwide.

Originally, the film was in development hell for years as filmmakers like Sonnenfeld tried to find a way to tackle the script’s comedic tone, musical numbers and blend of animation and live action sequences.

Enchanted 2 is all part of the studio’s plans to make more movies that help define the Disney brand. The project revolves around Giselle, a princess who is banished from her animated world by an evil queen. She is then thrown onto the live action streets of Manhattan to take care of herself.

Disney wants to bring back the first film’s stars.

Tim Hill, who directed the hybrid “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” is pushing his resume into hipper territory with this tale of an out-of-work slacker (Marsden) who accidentally injures the Easter Bunny (voiced by Brand) and must take him in as he recovers. As Fred struggles with the world’s worst houseguest, both will learn what it takes to finally grow up.

Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio and Brian Lynch are writing the screenplay. Illumination’s Christopher Meledandri and John Cohen are producing.

Marsden, who last appeared in Richard Kelly’s “The Box,” has two movies in the can. He appears in Neil LaBute’s remake of the British ensemble comedy “Death at a Funeral,” which opens in April, and then stars in “Straw Dogs,” Rod Lurie’s remake of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah thriller.
